Alternative Mining Indaba
Untold Stories of Women from Manganese host Communities.

Meet 34 year old Liness, a mother of 4 from Mwale Village who is in Cape town, South Africa attending the Alternative Mining Indaba. Liness is among many women negative affected by Manganese mining. An unknown company that was conducting exploration in the area has left trenches around their village destroying their crops, reducing farm land and polluting the Chofoshi stream where they draw water for basic use.
Liness was living Mwale Village for the first time and we were happy to see her smiling as we arrived in Lusaka on Friday 2nd February because she had been sick all through the 12 hour journey from Mansa to Lusaka.
After a restful night she handled the flight well and also enjoyed the boat cruise on the Atlantic Ocean.
oday Liness will be giving a solidarity statement at the AMI and we are extremely excited for her to have this platform of advocacy. She has also learnt what other women around Africa are experiencing and after one session, she said she wants to go back to school so she interpret English for her self.
Many thanks to Southern Africa Trust for supporting the Women’s Land Rights and Climate Justice Project.
